On the eastern outskirts of Exeter, Whipton Barton (locally known as Whipton), lies between the Pinhoe and Honiton Roads beyond Heavitree and stretches as far as the city’s edge at the M5. It includes the areas around Vaughan Road, Sweetbrier Lane, Honeylands and Birchy Barton Hill. It is a popular residential area, being particularly convenient for the Met Office which relocated here in 2003. There are a number of doctors, dentists and convenience stores dotted around the area.
The area of Whipton comprises lots of semi-detached housing and flats or maisonettes. The 2011 Census indicates that 31.8% of households rent from the local authority, a relatively high proportion for the city as a whole. Much of the housing style reflects this but there are also many privately owned homes which benefit from well-proportioned gardens, good sized rooms and dependable construction. Honeylands Drive is a well regarded development of nearly forty homes for those aged 55 and above. There is currently (2015) a new Persimmon development being built at Hill Barton Vale with 2 and 3 bed houses.
