St Leonards is an extremely highly sought after residential area of Exeter, found between the historic Quayside on the east side of the River Exe, Magdalen Road and Barrack Road. It offers lots of period and characterful property and is within easy walking distance of the City Centre and close to the bus route on Topsham Road giving access in and out of the City. Aside from housing, there are a number independent shops and cafés on Magdalen Road, a variety of schools, doctor and dentist surgeries and St Leonard’s church (C of E).
Much of the housing in St Leonards’ consists of Victorian and Georgian terraced properties of various sizes although there are also a number of modern and some older properties. For example, Lansdowne Terrace consists of Grade II listed Georgian houses, many of which have been converted into flats and still boast character features including high ceilings, picture rails and sash windows. Gras Lawn and Artillery Court are examples of prestigious modern developments near to the RD&E hospital. Properties in the Roberts Road area are mostly Victorian terraces with period features and are highly sought after due to their close proximity to the City Centre and the popular shops, schools and local amenities of Magdalen Street. The area around Victoria Park Road has many larger properties, of a variety of ages and types.
Due to its convenient location to the Quayside and the City Centre, properties in St Leonards attract a premium price. Much of the area is permit parking (permits can be obtained from the Council) and Topsham Road can be very busy at peak times but offers access to and from the City and out to the A30, M5 and A38.
