Situated on the West side of the River Exe, St Thomas and Cowick comprises housing, parks and shops. St Thomas covers the area between Alphington Road and Cowick Street as far as Buddle Lane, this area is close to the city centre and is popular with families. Cowick is the area slightly farther out between Buddle Lane and Tedburn Road and is less densely populated than St Thomas. There is a regular bus service to the city centre and a number of convenience stores dotted around.
Much of St Thomas comprises Victorian terraces of varying sizes, with a few more modern properties scattered around. Parts of St Thomas have flooded in previous decades, but recent and ongoing work on flood defences along the River Exe have prevented this from happening in recent times. Cowick comprises a wider variety of houses with some larger family houses and bungalows. Some of those towards the top of the hill such as the area around Wiltshire Close, offer good views across the Devon countryside.
